Identifying the Need

In a world grappling with the escalating challenges of youth polarization and extremist radicalization, the urgency for innovative and actionable solutions has never been more pronounced. Recognizing this critical juncture, the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) embarked on a mission to harness academic expertise and translate it into practical, community-oriented strategies. At the heart of this ambitious initiative was the development of tools and programs capable of countering these divisive forces and fostering a culture of resilience and inclusivity.

My Mission at PERIL

As the Consulting Director for Training and Partnership Development, I was pivotal in steering PERIL's strategic direction toward these objectives. My mandate was clear: to build and lead the Lab's training division, spearhead the launch of the Building Resilient Inclusive Communities of Knowledge (BRICK) toolkit for higher education, and forge impactful partnerships across educational sectors and community organizations.

Achieving Rapid Milestones

The journey that unfolded has been both challenging and exhilarating. In less than a year, I spearheaded the launch of the Lab's training division, a testament to my collective dedication to the Lab’s Co-Founders and my commitment to driving the mission forward. The inaugural 2023 Summer Institute marked a significant milestone under my leadership, bringing together a diverse group of young professionals and scholars in an innovative program focused on adopting public health approaches to preventing radicalization and violent extremism. The funder was so impressed by the execution that they doubled the 2024 funding.

Beyond the confines of higher education, I lead the initiatives to expand our reach into the K-12 sector, recognizing the importance of early intervention in cultivating democratic resilience. This strategic expansion was met with remarkable success, culminating in securing a partnership with Washington, D.C.’s largest high school, Jackson Reed, for a four-part training intervention.

In my year at PERIL, I generated approximately $250,000 in training sales revenue—a clear indicator of success in my strategic vision and execution.

Amplifying Our Impact

My role extended beyond program development to actively engaging with the broader community. As a workshop facilitator and trainer at premier national higher education convenings–like the Association for American State Colleges & Universities, I have had the privilege of sharing our research, insights, and methodologies with a broader audience, amplifying my client’s impact.

Central to my strategy was cultivating partnerships across the educational spectrum and with community and interfaith organizations nationwide. These partnerships were instrumental in extending my client's reach and embedding our approach within a network committed to combating polarization and fostering inclusivity.

Envisioning the Future

Reflecting on the past year's achievements, my journey at PERIL was characterized by rapid progress and significant impact. Leading the establishment of the training division, the Summer Institute, and the strategic expansion into K-12 education represent milestones that underscore my approach's effectiveness and pave the way for future endeavors.

Following my contract closing with PERIL, the organization will continue to impact the community, broaden its reach, and forge partnerships that amplify its efforts. The challenges they face are complex and evolving. Still, with continued dedication and strategic collaboration, I am confident that my leadership and vision shaped a future for PERIL, where democracy is strengthened by diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect.
